
YOGA FOR CANCER TEACHER TRAINING

This compassion based Yoga Teacher Training is designed for yoga teachers and health care providers who would like to offer alternative coping means to those facing cancer, those on the road to recovery and to caregivers. The course will guide teachers to safely share the practice and teachings of Yoga to support patients during treatment, along the healing journey and into the recovery phase. This training will also teach one how to assist students to regain physical strength, and through breath and meditation provide coping skills for the emotional side of cancer; hence dealing with all facets of cancer. The goal is to empower students so that they can resume living life to their fullest.
You Will Deepen Your Understanding Of:

The benefits of yoga and how it can help navigate the different physical and mental issues associated with cancer.

An overview of symptoms, treatments and side effects of common cancers.

Teaching asanas in a way that is accessible to all with the incorporation of modifications and props.

Use of breath (Pranayama) and meditation as it pertains too dealing with stress, anxiety and pain.

Pain management and the neurology of pain.

Some of the psychological and psychosocial concerns.

Traditional Yogic topics will be discussed and their relevance to this compassion based practice: Sat (simple being); Chit (awareness); Ananda (love); and Tapas (acceptance).

Common side effects and contradictions.

Bringing the teachings to a yoga studio or a health care facility such as a hospital or clinic.
ACCREDITATION
Upon completion students will receive a certificate which can be applied towards 34 hours Continuing Education Units (CEU) through Yoga Alliance.
PROGRAM PREREQUISITE
Students who have completed a 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training, as well as health professionals with an established Yoga practice and working knowledge of the principles of yogic alignment.

Sonia Clarke is an ERYT500 certified Yoga Instructor and has received a certificate in Yoga of Awareness for Cancer at Duke Integrated Medicine, part of Duke University Health Systems in Durham, NC. She is Canada’s first yoga teacher to receive this certification from Duke University. Sonia has been working with cancer patients and survivors for several years through cancer support centers and health care facilities throughout the Toronto area.
